Tuberculosis (TB) is the infectious disease that has claimed the most lives throughout history, surpassing even AIDS and COVID-19. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1.2 million people died from this disease in 2023, with over 9.5 million new infections recorded globally. Its causative agent, the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, exhibits high intrinsic resistance to several antibiotics, which requires prolonged and costly treatments. Among other factors, this leads to cases of antibiotic-resistant infections, which are a major concern due to their health consequences and their social and economic impact.
MycoVLC 2025 is envisioned as a high-level scientific meeting that will bring together experts in basic, biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, and evolutionary research on M. tuberculosis. For over a decade, researchers from Spain and Portugal have gathered annually to share scientific advances in tuberculosis, alternating the host country between the two. In 2025, Valencia will host this meeting. For this edition, the scope of the meeting will also expand towards a greater internationalization. Discussions will include advances in the study of the alarming and emerging antibiotic resistance the bacterium is developing, the host-pathogen interaction-a key point in understanding how infection occurs-and new developments in vaccine research.
