The Environmental Epidemiological Studies Service was created in 2024 by the Environment and Health Area of FISABIO as a scientific-technical service. Its main objective is to offer support for the study of the relationship between environmental factors (pollutants present in air, water, and diet) and the health of the population. In addition to the physical and biological environment, support is also offered for the study of other health determinants, such as psychosocial (family environment and social inequalities), behavioural, lifestyle, and dietary factors.
The personnel involved have more than 20 years of experience in research methodology in epidemiology and public health, applied to the evaluation of exposure to environmental pollutants. To do this, different tools have been used such as environmental measurements, exposure biomarkers, physical examinations, and questionnaires. In addition to the above, the group has extensive knowledge in studying the impact that these exposures may have on the health of the population. The personnel have worked mainly on two lines: one that covers vulnerable populations (such as pregnant women, children, and adolescents), and another, started in 2019, that contemplates the health of women in the climacteric period, and that includes women at risk of poverty and/or social exclusion.
