MOMENT

The MOMENT project aims to transform maternity care by promoting primary care-based midwifery-led models, enhancing maternal health outcomes, reducing unnecessary interventions, and optimising healthcare resources.

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 (health and well-being) and 5 (gender equality and empowerment), the project focuses on bridging the gap between evidence and real-world implementation of midwifery-led care. Despite strong evidence supporting its benefits, global adoption of midwifery-led care remains inconsistent, with many countries facing barriers to effective implementation.

The project, involving Belgium, Canada, Portugal, and Spain, is structured around a comprehensive approach, addressing systemic, organisational, and professional barriers through five work packages. These include the development of evidence-based tools like implementation plans and patient journey models to guide policymakers and healthcare providers in adopting midwifery-led care. The project will also conduct a series of studies, including mapping existing midwifery-led care models and synthesising evidence on policies that promote successful implementation.

Through the involvement of diverse stakeholders, including mothers, families, professionals, and policymakers, MOMENT fosters collaborative efforts to drive change. Key deliverables include context-specific reports, cost-offset analyses, and tailored implementation strategies for different countries. A holistic, person-centred, and multidisciplinary approach to ensure continuity of care from pregnancy through to early postnatal life, integrating midwifery services within existing healthcare systems underpins the project.

By focusing on the integration of midwifery-led models, MOMENT will help shift from fragmented, medical-led care to a more integrated, community-oriented model, ensuring midwifery-led care becomes a sustainable, scalable, and effective part of healthcare systems across Europe and beyond.
