The Can.Heal consortium aims to address cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment in a comprehensive manner. At the clinical level, next-generation sequencing technology will be applied to identify genetic profiles in patients and tumour cells, facilitating harmonised treatment decisions. In the field of genomics for public health, methods for estimating cancer risks in healthy populations and remote genetic counselling strategies will be developed. It also aims to integrate the Genome Europe biobanking initiative into public health genomics for cancer. In addition, the project will address ethical and legal aspects and develop training tools in oncogenomics. In essence, Can.Heal aims to improve access to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment through personalised medicine.
As part of its work on the project, Fisabio's Cancer and Public Health Research Area has developed the 'Guide for Integrating Equity in Cancer Genomics'. This guide presents 18 key actions to reduce social inequalities in access, use and implementation of scientific innovations in genomics applied to cancer.
