Development of smart lenses: Project Horus

The project is based on the development of a new generation of multifunctional intraocular lenses which allow the extended release and controlled therapeutic agents at intraocular level. Therefore it is an innovative project that seeks to eliminate the necessity of topical treatments and the risks associated with medical failure after the implantation of an intraocular lens, and increase the effectiveness of the medication allowed to maintain a constant and controlled release of the necessary drugs in the vicinity of the surgical site.

Given that it is a complex project that needs experts in several areas, it is carried out in collaboration with other institutions and companies. Particularly it involves, besides Fisabio Medical Ophthalmology (FOM), the Miguel Hernandez University, the Biomedical Research Centre, Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine of the CSIC and Polytechnic University of Valencia, as well as the company AJL Vitoria.
