CANCER RESEARCH AREA
Cancer is a combination of illnesses characterised by the existence of an abnormal proliferation of cells. What gives the characteristic of malignancy to this cell proliferation is its ability to invade organs and tissues and spread a long distance.
In absolute terms, cancer is the primary cause of death in Spain, and was the cause of 25.6% of all deaths in the year 2000. Cancer is the primary cause of death in men whilst in women it is in second place after cardiovascular diseases. At present it is calculated that the total prevalence of cancer in Spain is of more than 1,500,000 people.
The ageing of the population, the rise in many incidents of malignant tumours and the increased survival of cancer sufferers due to diagnostic and therapeutic advances, means there has been recorded a significant increase in the number of cancer patients (prevalence).
