Experimental Diabetic Retinopathy
     
  Free radicals, such as superoxide (O2-) or hydroxyl (OH) are significantly increased in diabetes. This increase could be due to several mechanisms like the rise in NADH for the pseudo-hypoxia mechanism or the auto-oxidation of the glucose that releases superoxide which facilitates the formation of AGE´s.        

Additionally, in diabetes they can alter the antioxidant mechanisms that normally eliminate the oxidising radicals such as the superoxide dumatase and the NADPH system- glutathione peroxidise.     

It is because of this we are interested in the study of the ocular pathophysiological mechanisms in this disease and the effect of antioxidant treatments to improve the changes of the eye in the fields of:   

•    Experimental studies of induced diabetes and treatment with antioxidants.
•    Cell culture in ARPE-19 and induction of diabetes.
